South Africa’s Gini coefficient continues to rank among the highest in the world, revealing a stark reality: democratic freedoms have not translated into economic equality for the majority of South Africans.
The structural roots of this inequality lie deep in the colonial and apartheid legacy — a deliberate system designed to concentrate wealth in the hands of a few while excluding the majority from economic participation. Three decades into our democracy, those structural barriers remain largely intact.
SPoT believes that transformation is not merely a political imperative but an economic necessity. Without genuine economic inclusion, social cohesion remains fragile and our democracy is undermined by the persistent exclusion of millions of citizens from the economy’s benefits.
**What needs to change?**
First, ownership patterns in key sectors of the economy must reflect the demographic reality of our country. The financial sector, mining, manufacturing and services continue to be dominated by a narrow elite that does not represent South Africa’s population.
Second, procurement and supply chain transformation must move beyond compliance to genuine empowerment. Too many companies use broad-based BEE merely as a compliance exercise, without transforming actual economic relationships.
Third, the financial sector must do more to channel capital to historically excluded communities, entrepreneurs and enterprises. The current pattern of capital allocation perpetuates historical exclusions.
SPoT’s Economic Inclusion and Investments work stream is developing concrete proposals in each of these areas, to be tabled at our Relaunch Conference.
The transformation agenda is urgent. South Africa cannot afford another decade of half-measures.
